Cloud computing made AI scalable. But it also made it harder to secure.
When AI systems move to the cloud, they stop being isolated tools. They become part of a larger ecosystem, connected to storage, APIs, SaaS tools, and internal workflows. That interconnectedness is what creates risk. Data is no longer sitting in one place. It’s moving constantly across systems, often without clear visibility.
Recent reports show how serious this has become. Nearly 47% of sensitive cloud data is still unencrypted, even as AI systems gain broader access to enterprise information. At the same time, organizations are adopting AI faster than they can build governance around it, creating a gap between capability and control.
Why Cloud AI Is Still Worth It
Despite these risks, cloud-based AI is not optional anymore. It enables scale, flexibility, and real-time processing that on-prem systems simply can’t match. Teams can deploy models faster, integrate them with business tools, and access shared data across departments.
This is why enterprises continue to invest heavily in both AI and cloud security. The combination allows organizations to automate workflows, improve decision-making, and build systems that operate continuously. The value is clear. The challenge is not whether to use cloud AI, but how to use it safely.
The cloud also offers an advantage: centralization. When designed properly, it allows for unified monitoring, policy enforcement, and security controls across all AI interactions. In theory, this should make systems more secure. In practice, most organizations haven’t caught up yet.
Why Data Leaks Are Harder to Detect
The biggest shift is how data leaks actually happen.
They’re no longer always the result of a breach. Increasingly, they happen through normal system behavior. AI systems access data, process it, and move it across tools. If permissions are too broad or controls are weak, that data can be exposed without triggering alarms.
Cloud environments make this worse. Reports show that many organizations run workloads with excessive permissions and external access, creating “sitting duck” systems that attackers, or even the AI itself, can exploit. APIs, identity tokens, and third-party integrations become the weakest points, allowing data to move in ways that look legitimate but aren’t.
This is why modern data leaks are often quiet. There’s no obvious break-in. Instead, there’s a gradual loss of control, data flowing where it shouldn’t, through systems that were never fully secured.
My Perspective
The biggest mistake is thinking cloud AI security is about infrastructure. It’s not. It’s about data movement.
In most enterprise setups, the model isn’t the risk. The risk is everything connected to it, APIs, storage layers, identity systems, and external tools. That’s where data actually leaks. And once AI is involved, the scale increases dramatically because the system is constantly reading, writing, and generating data.
Because in cloud environments, you can’t rely on static security anymore. The system is always moving. So, the protection has to move with it.

Very interesting and it's not just about AI, any time you put anything in the "Cloud" you are creating a much bigger threat & risk landscape. But there is the added complication that the AI models may spread the risk even wider.
AI and Data Sovereignty are growing topics and there is a pendulum swing away from global hyperscalers to country specific hosting (sovereign). Not to mention the various data protection and privacy acts which can prevent the use of AI hosted capabilities.
Organisations really need to map their entire end-to-end landscape and know where all their data and processes are operating from - especially SaaS platforms with "AI" built in. There's still a lot of work needed by organisations to truly understand their risk landscape and what this means for their overall BCP.
